Motivational Maps

“Motivation is the motive – the internal reason – we have which prompts us to act in certain ways and directions.”

James Sale - Creator of Motivational Maps

What are Motivational Maps?

Motivational Maps® are a powerful tool for gaining insight into what is motivating an individual. Whereas personality tests deal with traits that tend to be fairly fixed, motivation is far more fluid and dynamic, and changes over time. Motivational Maps measure emotional energy and where it is flowing to.

What motivates us changes over time, influenced by significant events in our lives. E.g. starting a new job role, becoming a parent, retirement, illness or bereavement. Therefore what once motivated you may no longer motivate you. The Maps help us to gain a deeper understanding of what drives you and influences your decisions and behaviour, which ultimately affects your happiness and performance.

There are 3 primary sources to the Motivational Map: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Edgar Schein’s Career Anchors and The Enneagram.

What’s involved?

Motivational Maps are an ISO accredited self-perception inventory that gives a snapshot of current motivation levels through a questionnaire that takes around 12 minutes to complete.

Once completed individuals are provided with a Map report that identifies preferences over the 9 motivators, organised into three areas of achievement, relationships and growth, and how well these are currently being fulfilled.

Information from the report is then explained and expanded through our de-brief coaching session, which will include actionable strategies for maintaining and improving your motivation.

Motivational Maps for Teams & Businesses:

They are also incredibly effective with teams enabling management and leadership to to understand the motivations of their team and how these interact with each other. Understanding what motivates different members of your team and how they prefer to work enables you to

  • better support team members and ensure they are in the correct role

  • offer incentives people actually want and respond to (hint - not everyone is motivated by a bonus!)

  • identify those who are feeling de-motivated and may be at risk of ‘quiet-quitting’ or  impacting the whole team’s satisfaction and productivity

  • become aware of where certain team members may have conflicting motivations and preferences, enabling you to consider how to organise projects and working patterns for everyone’s benefit

  • Have actionable data that can be measured again after changes have been implemented to measure effectiveness

  • Develop a team that feel happy, fulfilled and valued

Use in performance appraisals, leaderships development and recruitment.

Ultimately resulting in better performance, improved staff retention and a better bottom line!
